I preordered the Kensington VideoCAM when I saw it on deal-mac. I knew that I was going to be putting this website up and I thought, "Hey, webcam, I'll need one of those." And knowing that Kensington is a Mac friendly company and they're advertising this line as very Mac friendly, I thought that this would go well with my G3.

After about a month, the camera came. It arrived about 4 days after the product was announced. I was a little disappointed because when they announced the line, they had 3 models, the VideoCAM, the VideoCAM VGA and the VideoCAM S-VGA. I tried to switch my order to the VGA model but it didn't go through in time. I received my camera on 10/14 and played with it pretty heavily that night.

Installation was pretty easy. I installed the software from the CD and then restarted. I plugged the camera into my USB card (4-Port Entrega) and started up the software. It launched and I was off.

The first image to come out of this was pretty terrible. Red all over. I'll admit that I don't know much when it comes to camera terms. I tweaked things around and tried to calibrate things according to white walls. I'm still working on it.

Tweaking was pretty easy. The software lets you adjust settings in three ways. Options are good. My problem with the software is that it feels very ported. I wish there were a consistent Mac interface. But it's not as bad as some other ported programs I've seen for scanners and the like.

Speaking of scanners, the box of the VideoCAM saws that TWAIN image support for stills is supported but I found no drivers for it on the CD. Photoshop says no TWAIN devices are connected.

The camera focuses from 1" to infinity, which allows for some nice detail shots like this.
