Calista
I'm in a Calista sort of mood.
I just talked to her on the phone, and I'm listening to the Gufs, the two CDs of theirs that I own. So I'll talk about her.
Calista Flockhart. We dated for about two months the summer of my junior year. Well, that's chronological time. As far as real dating time goes, I'd mark it more around 3 weeks. But what a trip it was. I met Calista through blind luck. Luck be a lady, and it was her.
You see, I loved the movie Jurassic Park. Loved it so much that I dragged my family and Jason to see this grand Speilbergian masterpiece at its sneak preview. Made them go an hour and a half early. That was the movie I learned the location of the optimum sound seats in Westown. (third row, center, right between the first two speakers).
So when the sequel came out, I was still excited. I dragged a bunch of friends from Marquette. Then, on a whim, I called my friend Joel, who went to Central at the time. He brought another Central guy. And they showed up late of course. Again, we were early for the movie.

We're waiting in line, and my parents show up. They've decided to do a night out. They start talking to my friends from Marquette who they've started to recognize, because I've started bringing them home a lot. So I do the cool high school trick of totally forgetting that my parents are there by talking to Joel and Carl and these two girls that they know from Central who just appeared. We talk about AP tests, of all things. I start bad mouthing my old AP US History teacher (still bitter about that 4 the year before) and it turns out that Mr. Foran is the uncle of one of the girls. Oops.
It's about then that I notice that the other girl is really cute. I can tell this because I've started to be a lot funnier. And I'm trying way too hard. But it's cute (I'll always have that to fall back on). So when the line starts moving, I ask Joel what the brunette's name is.
"That's Calista Flockhart. Wow man, like you'd have no problem dating her," he says.
"What do you mean?" I'm a little puzzled.
"Uh, well, she like doesn't go out. But hey man, go for it." And he tells Carl. We're sitting so that the two girls are in the middle of a row, Carl's to their right and then Joel and then me. The Marquette guys are in the row in front (I told them we should have gotten there earlier...). Carl's making noise, as usual. He offers to trade seats with me. I tell him it's ok. I plan to make my move after the movie.
The movie sucks, by the way, if you haven't seen it.
The suckiness of this exploitative sequel lets my imagination wander. By the time the movie ends, Calista and I are married and have three cute kids. But disaster of disasters happens when she and her friend leave just as the end credits hit the screen. Checking my "cool" barometer, I realize that chasing after her is not a good thing. So I chalk the whole chance meeting up as a loss and go on with my life.
